One of these days, when cooling isn't a problem.. I'm going to have a nice solid oak case...

Question: should I acquire deepcast resin [for moulds above50 grams in weight, whatever that means in terms of a CASE covering ] or a shallowcast resin kit.

Also does it make sense to buy pigment or leave the resin as it is and simply PAINT it over???

What are cheap/efficient resin casting methods??

The 'resin' secretions on my case r actually not resin at all, but that Milliput stuff, a 2-part epoxy putty that dries rock hard in about 2 - 3 hours. This can be found at any good hobby shops, as too can proper resin I think.

its gonna be an ALIEN case mod.

If I can pull it off- BLACK on Black on black with silvery extruding edges.

I want it as depressing and scary as possible.

BTW: agree with your PM comment about blue lighting in cases...

[barf]

Personaly your case's green light ALWAYS makes me think of the Borg, so I might have to stick to red or that blacklight thingy [ultraviolet] but then it ain't gonna work [probably] on a black surface...

Anyhow- modelling kit, metal saw, some case fans, a kilo of resin and... Alien Lair here I come!!

Anywayyyy.. lets talk tools and tricks.

If you are going for black, then don't bother with UV - it only works with white things!

I was torn between yellow or green, but green just edged it for me, the yellow didn't look as nice.

If you choose red, see one lit up before you buy - some look very pink when lit - a girly pink Alien mod would look, well, girly!

1. I've never done anything like resin modelling on my pc, so i can't offer any advice to you on that.

2. For lighting, DO NOT GET NEONS! Don't! Get cold cathodes, they run perfectly cold and emit about twice the amount of light as neons, not to mention that they're much thinner and thus easier to find spots for.

3. If you're going to paint the case, go with automotive paint as it is the best thing for painting cases.

Apart from that, just have fun

one problem with painting--do resin and automotive paint go together?? or will the paint slide off [gracefully] off the shiny resin-y surface???

Other than that I had me a bad night and some NEXT ideas came to mind--5 in the alien/avp universe and a few others.

I think Slof is one to start of trends...

Not sure if paint will stick to it, another thing that might work better is to swirl paint INTO it, so that once the resine has set it has colour marbled into it, similar to alien gunk

I saw something about case modding in one of my PC mags but I'm not sure if I would do it myself perhaps when I have another computer case to experiment on.

Lucky you but in my case I normally mess things up the first couple of times so I guess wont be experimenting on my only case.

Don't "chop" too fast otherwise you might end up with a caseless computer.... and thats annoying when you get your computer FULL of dust
