I heard this at captainn.net:

Okay, dudes and dudettes... if you've got Windows XP... you gotta listen to me. There's a mega-huge security flaw in XP that needs to be fixed. It can arbitrarily delete files from any folder on your PC. This is a VERY bad thing. Fortunately, Windows XP Service Pack 1 fixes this error. Unfortunately, this is a 50 MB download. DESPITE this, you MUST get this file. If you don't, there is a good chance that you may lose a lot of your files. Explain the severity of this error to your parents if your PC isn't your own or if you are on dial-up and only have one phone line. You NEED to get this update. Even if you have a pirated version of XP, there is still a workaround way to update and even though I won't condone piracy, I do believe that this error MUST be patched by all. If you are on a pirated PC and use Netscape, you SHOULD be able to go to Windows Update and download it through Netscape. This info from our favorite Microsoft programmer, SaberWulf, who didn't realize why I was asking this for someone else in the channel until it was too late. Bill, forgive him. I have an extra copy of XP Pro that's not being used. Consider that exchange for the one one of the #Captain_N'rs used. At any rate, guys... you NEED to get this... so DO IT.

He says it only applies to windows XP, but I checked the windows site and it applies to ALL versions of windows. It is listed as a critical threat that could cause serious problems if used. Here is the info the windows security bulletin listed:

Be warned, if you have a pirated version of Windows XP, installing this patch will force you to format your hard drive and have to reinstall windows.

So, if you do have a pirated version of Win XP, do not install the patch.

I use Windows updater once a week (for WinME) and as a clean install the first update was 33MB. Last night's update for the problem mentioned here was a titchy 277KB. It was marked as a critical update and just updated this particular problem. At 133MB for XP I'd have to guess that's a huge service pack being downloaded. Glad I got ME )

Just been and checked via the link given in a post above and the patch for XP (home and Pro) for the problem mentioned is also 277KB.

I just found out the security bulletin and the guy at captainn.net were talking about 2 different things, and there is a seperate problem for windows XP that does not affect other windows.

Complex process - probably means downloading corrupted certificate. And I think you can set windows to ask you before downloading even subscribed certificate.
