On that size of budget, you could go for the biggie: The Radeon 9800 pro 128mb. This is currently the absolute top of the pile, they don't come better than this, and with a budget of $500 you can easily afford it.
You can get a full specs listing
here. The site's British, so probably no good for buying from, but it does list the specs and offer a description. If I had $500 or in my case, the British equivalent, that's what I'd go for - I've seen the benchtest results for this baby and its nearest rival and I'd recommend this one!

Well, my problem is that I live in Norway so the Radeon 9800 cost around $100 more. But I'm going to the UK this summer so I might buy it when I'm there.

It's good, but in the benchtest article I read the Radeon was just better. It is also much faster for rendering 3d artwork than the GeForce FX. If I had the funds, I would go with the Radeon.

Radion graphic cards are not always liked by nVidia optimised games.... (ie American Army)

I do know that nVidia are already working on a new card after the GeForce FX did not perform as well as they had hoped. Based on the NV30 technology, it was supposed to be blindingly fast, but fell short of Radeon's new offering in just too many areas. Now, instead they are concentrating on NV35 - supposed to be even better, addressing some of the bugs and problems they had encountered with the NV30. We will just have to wait and see what happens in the next few months!
Yes, I know - I'm a geek!

Hmm, interesting, I read a benchmark test where the FX performed quite a lot better than the best Radeon in UT2003 (although it did fall shorter in some other areas, but as UT2003 is a perfect case-in-point of what I use my comp for, this is the one I remember).

I happened upon another Radeon/GFFX comparison recently for UT2003. There's not actually very much between the cards, but the FX did noticeably better most of the time. However, Radeon was more stable on higher resolutions, although the FX still did slightly better at highest resolutions until some advanced features like 4xAA were turned on. Testing done on Quake 3 showed that the Radeon was significantly better, but as even a GF4 will run that game at a perfect FPS, any testing done on Q3 is pretty much a moot point.
I guess the real factor is the price: although the latest Radeons are better cards for the future as they have a better fill rate and appear to be more reliable, they're prohibitively expensive. I'm planning on getting an Alienware comp in a couple of months and am currently browsing the options, the best Radeon shown on the site is about

Basically it's a company who puts together computers designed for gamers. Interesting and award-winning stuff. Feel free to call it expensive water, I don't care cos I don't have to pay for it... my 18th birthday prezzie.
