Everyone tell me how they think a story should end, should it end with a to be continued, in order to create a sequel or does this add suspense?
Or should you put "the end", does this completely wrap up the story or does it give the author a right to do a sequel?

kinda both ways, really. a The End is fine, but put in an epilogue, that way it opens it up for to be continues as well as closing it. sort of an omni ending, dont ya think?

I never put 'the end' on mine - I like to think it's fairly obvious it's finished. I try to conclude stories with a finalising sentence, sometimes I like to leave them hanging and just use 3 dots, like thus...
I use epilogues at the end of multi-chaptered stories, as they help to tie up any loose ends and give the reader an idea of what happens after the main story.

epilogues are good - they let you do both a good suspense action ending, and a slow after math ending at the same time

I have to say I've never read an entire fanfic -can't concentrate long enough to read anything if it doesn't have an official-looking cover - but speaking generally, it's a bit cheesy to end a story with either "The end" or "To be continued..." or anything else. Although as Slof said the ... at the end of the last sentence is a good closer, particularly if your story's meant to be a chiller. If you want to leave the story open for a sequel, leave plenty of loose ends and unresolveds (or just one or two very obvious ones) so people actually expect a sequel.

thats the second biggest problem with a story is actually going through all the work to finish the story.

to be continued is kinda plain.
Usually sequels do NOT continue immediately after the first book, so a TBC on the first one is...a primise you won't keep [probably], as you'll start the next one with different settings, etc.

You're missing out on some good reading matter then. Just because it's not official, doesn't make it bad - AlienQueen's Chrysalis, for example, is way better than any of the published novels I've read - and I've read them all.

Oh I'm sure they're not bad, I know a lot of them are very good actually judging from what I've seen from a couple of skims. It's down to my concentration (of which there is almost none, 'tis one of my symptoms) rather than the quality of the works...

some of the bigger works DO require dedication and consistency, but, overall, they are VERY worth reading

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, for some reason my extreme lack of energy also affects my concentration. It's why I had to stop writing for PlanetAvP...

None, I was a staff writer. Did a few ModOTW's and a Primal Hunt review that David unfortunately mistyped the rating for. I'd given it a 3 and a half if I remember rightly.

To go back to the main topic, if the story ends abrubtly, you may want to put in a 'The End' just to let your reader that it is in fact finished. If it's blatantly obvious the story has finished then there's no need to tell the reader.
As for TBCs, only put one in if you're already working on a sequel. Like Matrix Revolutions, Back To The Future - Part 2, or Superman.
The beauty of HTML of course, is, if you put The End, and then write a sequel, you can always change it to 'To Be Continued'.
