This will give you some background info about the Pillar of Autumn. The ship that the humans in HALO were aboard before they were forced to abandon it.
The Pillar of Autumn is commanded by Jacob Keyes. It's AI is called Cortana, she monitors the ship. The Pillar of Autumn is a halycon class war ship, which is the smallest type able to serve in the military. It is also one of the oldest serving war ships in the whole fleet. It is home to the finest marines to serve the fleet. It also has the only remaining spartan. It was sent to investigate Halo and for that distracted the covenant invasion which was heading to earth. It was attacked and shot down, it landed somewhere on Halo. You, a good number of marines, Cortana, and the captain are the only survivors.
